The first day we landed in Maui, we had terrible weather. It was grey, overcast, and so windy that it felt more like Chicago than a tropical island. My first thought was, ‘Why did we ever leave beautiful Kaui?!’ lol After getting off the plane and heading to the car rental shuttle pickup, we were met with a long line of disgruntled tourists waiting for the shuttle to arrive. When it finally came around, it fit only a handful of people and the line barely moved. Chris, being the genius problem solver that he is, decided to call an uber. In just a few minutes we were successfully dropped of at Alamo. We had our pick from their fleet of jeeps, having successfully jumped the crowds, and just like that the sun came back out and we were back in vacation mode.
When we were plotting out our Hawaii trip, we decided to schedule all the adventure-packed days at the very beginning of the week while we were fresh with excitement and energy. Flash forward about 6 days into the the trip and you have these photos you see here. This was the relaxation part of the trip, and we could not have picked a better area for it. Maui is pretty laid back in general, but Wailea Beach was just tranquil and beautiful. Busy enough to have excellent people watching, but quiet enough that we could easily have some peace and quiet on our room’s ocean front patio. It was the perfect place to have breakfast every morning, staring at that giant palm tree you see in the photos. What is it about palm trees that just make you feel like you’re on vacation?? I mean, we have palm trees in California (obviously) but they just don’t compare to the ones in Hawaii.
I wore this cute wrap dress as a swim coverup throughout most our trip. It’s from an Australian company called Showpo (scroll down to the bottom of the post to get the link) and it was perfect for Hawaii. Lightweight and breezy, it was easy to through in my beach bag or quickly throw on over my suit when it was time to grab smoothies from the cafe.
That other gorgeous tree, the one that looks like the tree of life from the Lion King, was swarming with monarch butterflies. I am a fanatic about seeing butterflies anywhere I go (there’s actually a butterfly garden in LA if you’re in the area. We went a few years ago and loved it!) But seeing butterflies out in the real world is just such a special little thing that makes me smile. I feel the same way about hummingbirds too actually. So to be on vacation, in Hawaii, perfect weather, relaxed as can be, with about twenty butterflies circling all around me- I was in heaven! Chris was laughing at me because I was just wide eyed, grinning ear to ear, pointing out each and every butterfly to him. Pretty much a kid in a candy store. When we got home from Hawaii and I was looking through our photos, I was so excited to see that a few butterflies were caught on camera mid-flight as they circled around the tree I was standing under. You can see one of them in the first photo in the blog post – a little where’s Waldo project for you 😉
