My birthday falls on Valentine’s Day each year, so Chris and I try to get a little creative with how we celebrate to beat those pesky crowds. A few years ago we did a dinner “crawl” where we basically got tapas at a few different restaurants and lounges in an effort to avoid the prix fixe menus that most restaurants resort to on Valentine’s Day. This year it fell on a Wednesday, which meant less crowds but also more hassle since Chris had to work that day. We decided to do something similar this year and city hop for each meal of the day.
First, we woke up bright and early for a breakfast date at Verve Coffee in West Hollywood. They have the best avocado toast, so many yummy pastries, and of course delicious coffee. When I worked in Beverly Hills I used to drive into town super early and get there right when they opened to do some blog work before my day job. It was calming to have the place almost to myself and a relaxed way to start the morning. Other awesome places to have a morning coffee date or an early morning work session are Blue Bottle Coffee, Alfred Coffee Melrose Place, Greendoor, The Black Bicycle Cafe.
The morning of my birthday, it was a little cloudy and rainy, but as is typical for LA the rain cleared up by about 10am. You usually can’t trust the forecast too much here when it says rain (this past week excluded, what is up with all this rain??). I actually kind of love the gloomy weather right now since I’ve been sick the past few days. Who doesn’t love cuddling up with the pups on a rainy day?! Normally though, it drizzles a little in the early morning and is all clear by noon.
After breakfast with Chris, I had to find a vase for all those beautiful red roses! In a bit of a rush, I ran inside the nearest Target and grabbed the only vase in the whole store. Seriously, how is it possible to only have ONE vase in an entire Target?? Luckily for me it was a Magnolia Farms vase and exactly the right size so I was happy!
After that I rushed across town to Venice to meet up with my friend Ronee for lunch at Butcher’s Daughter. Ronee is a talented and creative writer who also has her own blog and Instagram focusing on lifestyle, DIY, travel, and all the best coffee shops across Northern and Southern California. Check out her blog at Paper Fleur and her Instagram @ronneeuyeshiro. The food at Butcher’s daughter was amazing as always, and I just love all the pretty decor (total home inspo!). The owner of the restaurant is the same founder of Wanderlust, so you know she’s got great style! Other great lunch options in the Venice area are Rose Cafe, The Sunny Spot, Gjelina, and Felix.
For dinner, we couldn’t decide if we wanted to do a night in, or to go out to dinner since I was feeling under the weather and still recovering from some ear issues I had on my flight home the weekend before. (Talk about getting old!) The day of my birthday we decided we didn’t want to cook, and I was feeling well enough to get dolled up for a night out in Beverly Hills. Of course with no pre-made reservations, finding a restaurant with an open table on Valentines Day was going to be a bit difficult.
With only a few options available, we settled on Villa Blanca in Beverly Hills. It’s pretty white decor and huge floral bouquets put it on my “try list” years ago, so I was excited to finally have the chance to cross it off my list. They did have a prix fixe menu, but it was surprisingly really delicious! We both got the Filet Mignon option, and cleaned our plates. We have so many favorites in that area, but I also love trying new places. That’s not hard to do in LA, since it seems like a new restaurant opens every other day! When my family was in town we went to Citizen in Beverly Hills and that was outstanding! I can’t wait for a reason to go back. Chris and I split the lamb dish and it was the best I’ve ever eaten in my life. We have so many other faves in this area but we love Sugarfish, A.O.C, and Norah to name a few.
If you’re lucky enough to have your birthday on the weekend, heading to the beach is a great option no matter what time of the year it is. Since Chris and I were about to head to Hawaii in a few days, we decided to skip the beach and save it for vacation. We had also planned to watch sunset, but the day got away from us. My favorite places to watch sunset are Manhattan Beach Pier, Terrenea Resort, any rooftop restaurant, and Griffith Observatory.
